Suggestions Please

The Committee welcomes suggestions for future events and/or talks.  If anyone would like to give a short talk about their own research interests, we would be pleased to hear from them.  Please contact the Events Organiser (Jenny Noake) or any of the Committee members with details.

Also, if you are an experienced researcher and would be prepared to help other members by manning one of the help-desks at meetings or helping out at the Saturday drop-in centre, please talk to one of the Committee.

We hope to organise some outdoor events as well as the normal monthly meetings - any suggestions would be welcomed.

Projects

If any members would like to volunteer to take part in projects or have any suggestions for possible future projects, please contact the Project Coordinator, Jenny Noake.

Holiday Time

August is our holiday month - branches do not usually have meetings this month as many members will be away.

Visiting East Kent?

If you are planning a trip to our area, let us know and we might be able to help you with advice on where to stay and where to find the records.

Urgent Call for speakers

We are experiencing great difficulty in finding good speakers who are prepared to travel to Deal to give talks at our meetings.  If you are a speaker, or think you have an interesting story to tell, or know someone who is an interesting speaker on family history topics, please contact your webmaster or a member of the committee with details.  We would also welcome short talks from members who have an interesting problem, or have made an interesting discovery, in their family history.

This page will contain details of future branch meetings and events as information becomes available.  Reports and notes from past meetings can be found here.

If no information is available here one week before the meeting date, please refer to the East Kent Mercury for details.

All meetings will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in the Wesley Hall, Trinity Church, Union Road, Deal, 7.30 for 8.00pm, unless otherwise stated.

There is a bookstall where you can buy a wide range of books and pamphlets relating to family history.  We also keep a range of books and exchange journals which can be borrowed for one month.

Free refreshments (tea or coffee) are provided at meetings before the main speaker.

Members of the Committee and other volunteers will be on hand before and after all meetings to help members and guests with their queries.  Please feel free to talk to any of us if you need help or advice with your research.

Your Committee would like to organise other events in between regular meetings and would welcome suggestions from members.

We hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join us at the branch meetings, especially if you are visiting from outside the area.

Please come along and boost the numbers - don't let the branch die.

Tuesday 11th March 2008

We have two for the price of one in March when Meryl Catty and Audrey Gillett will be doing their well-known double act in a talk entitled "Willpower".

Some of you will remember Meryl's previous talks to the Branch on newspaper heritage (11th June 2002) and marriage licenses (13th June 2006).  She also gave a very interesting talk for beginners at our inaugural meeting on 11th April 2000.  Audrey has previously talked to us about the clothes our ancestors wore (8th February 2005) and claims to fame at the Society AGM (20th October 2007).

Look out for Meryl again in September when she will be regaling us with a talk entitled "Family history at your fingertips".

Tuesday 8th April 2008

Our speaker this month is new to the Branch: Mr. David Wright will be giving a talk entitled "Death and Burials".

Tuesday 13th May 2008

Another new speaker for May - coinciding with the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the opening of the new pier by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in 1957, Mr. Martyn Webster will tak to us about Deal's piers.

Tuesday 10th June 2008

Our speaker for June will be Michael Gandy, who will making another welcome return to Deal to talk about the East India Company. Some of you will remember Michael's previous talks to the Branch on the problems of London ancestry (13th March 2001) and Irish Ancestry (14 November 2006).

Tuesday 8th July 2008

A home-grown speaker for June - Mrs. Jenny Noake will be giving a talk about costume through the ages and what we can surmise from looking at pictures of our ancestors.

Tuesday 12th August 2008
